Spent the morning, between 7.30am and 11am, getting the brook back to a good state, picking the water course, banks and paths, between McDonalds and Lower Street bridge. The biggest issue was caused by the remnant flytipping associated with the clothing recycling cabin, in Carpet Right's carpark. A shed load of McDonald's trash(insert pun here) as usual, both in and on the banks of the brook. However, since the installation of the bins, it has dropped the amount of litter substantially. The biggest need for a bin is at the pedestrian crossing that hospital workers and patients use, opposite the Northfield Avenue retail park, just before the roundabout. People seem to get to the crossing and then throw what they're carrying over the wooden fence. Stickleback are strong this year and evidence of water voles show that the habitat is coming back after many years of being poisoned by the shoe and motor repair industries. I collected 30KG in about 7 large bags.
I met one of the council's street cleaners, called Larry, who was very friendly and thanked us for helping with his job. Interesting items were a bird feeder, a stainless closed shackle padlock, a smart phone and my first piece of 'Vaping' litter, what a drag. This takes our total to 462KG, as part of this year's 1 Ton litter pick. .
