2017 Ton of litter challenge

Northfield Avenue,Kettering,nn16 9hu

24 Dec 2017

00:00

The previous 18 months has been very tough with 3 deaths of immediate family members and a triple portion of life changing health news, so I haven't been able to get out and pick. After getting through most of the issues, I'm now back with a vengeance. This year we're going to take on the challenge to collect 1 metric Ton of litter, just from the roads and green spaces of Kettering and surrounding areas. The main sites that have really suffered since I stopped picking are the woodland by Rothwell Road bridge, the A43 link road, the A14 slip roads and Northfield Avenue Slade brook corridor, especially the Union Street copse. The McDonalds bins continue to help the litter situation, but sadly the types that drop litter don't use bins, so we've still got a steady stream of their litter to clean up. In addition to the 1 Ton of rubbish, this year's cause is Nanna's Animal Rescue in Irthlingborough.

This breathtakingly selfless charity is entirely staffed by unpaid volunteers, who work all through the seasons, mucking out, nursing and caring for our county's unwanted and abandoned animals. This week, Nanna's announced that it is struggling severely with trying to pay its food and vets bill, following a major spike in animal admissions. This threatens the work and future of the charity, so we've decided to do something about it. We have established a £1000 fundraising target on the just giving website, so that people who want to support the charity can help out and make a donation. We appreciate any and all help deeply, as very few people speak for the Hedgehogs and other animals that are continually displaced by all the new build and road developments that can be seen all across our county. I would really like to incorporate more recycling in to my picking. Sending what we collect to landfill is counterproductive, as it's just moving one bit of dumped rubbish to another piece of countryside and it costs £100's per ton for the council to dispose of it. Sorting litter as you pick is a real tricky proposition, as it requires at least three bags, a bag for heavy plastics, metals and paper/cardboard, a bag for plastic film(supermarkets take this) and non-recyclables. The other solution is to pick it three times, using just one bag, but this is probably not practical. On the first pick this week I will start to use multi bags, to see how it goes. I am aiming to get everyone that I can, including the colleagues at Asda, to sponsor the pick, in aid of Nanna's animal rescue centre. We will be sooooo grateful for all and any donations, which can be sent via the Just Giving website. www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/kettering-litteraction The total for the 2018 1 Tonne litter pick hit 1270KG in December, making this year a genuine success. We also managed to raise £250 from the colleagues on the nightshift at Asda and matched that amount from personal wages. A special thanks to Rebecca, section leader at Asda Kettering for her help with fundraising. Nanna's in Irthlingborough received their £500 in March 2018, after we finally managed to contact someone, their website having been hacked earlier in the year. The animal rescue centre had just suffered from frozen pipes and no water supply, so the money really came at an ideal time. Thanks to everyone who sponsored me and thanks to all our volunteers, for their hard work on their days off..

Cronton Pathways Project
We are a revitalised 'clean-up' group of some 20 years' standing which incorporated collaboration with other agencies such as the Environment Agency, TCV, Highways and Groundwork as well as improving communication with our LA, local farmers and schools. Our aims broadened to include two new elements, namely education on litter and LA backed health walks. The latter has enabled people to enjoy our rural pathways, which are now regularly litter-picked, and at the same time build up their stamina in walking for health. In 2011, through fundraising, we were able to purchase two community notice boards to further publicise local events and amenities and our aims. We were very grateful to Groundwork Merseyside for installing them. It continues to be very satisfying to see people reading the notices displayed there and to see some new helpers on our litter-picks and new walkers on our health walks as a result. Both noticeboards were renovated this year, 2018 with help from a grant from Cronton Parish Council, for which we thank them. Our LA, Knowsley MBC, has always been supportive but In recent years, due to funding cuts to LAs we have had reduced contact with them, although they continue to help us by removing the bags of litter we collect on our biannual litter picks. We forged links with one of our neighbouring LAs, Halton, with a view to liaising on littering of our border areas. They provided us with litter-pickers and bags. This has made a big difference to our effectiveness. Updated 24.3.2018

Tidy Tavi
Tidy Tavi volunteers meet on the first Saturday each month to pick up litter from the streets and public spaces of the lovely town of Tavistock in Devon. We have been operating since October 2012 and attendance varies from about 18-30 local residents. We do not operate any sort of membership scheme or register. Volunteers simply come along when they can spare some time. This is important because we do not want anyone to feel committed to join in every month, or even for the full 2 hours. We work from 10 AM to midday and frequently fill 30-40 sacks of rubbish that are disposed of by West Devon District Council. Litter pickers, high visibility jackets, rubbish bags and hoops are provided. The group is supported by many local businesses including Tesco, who send some of their staff to help, and the Meadowlands Leisure Centre, where the group meets, who store our equipment for us. Several cafés in Tavistock supply free teas and coffees to volunteers. Critical support is also provided by our local newspaper, the Tavistock Times Gazette, who publish reports and print recruiting posters for the group.
