2nd mini event of the 1 Ton litter pick.

Northfield Avenue,Kettering,nn16 9hu

21 Oct 2014

23:00

Today, 22nd of October, our group hit the Slade Brook, between Lower Street and Dyson Drive. Although the pick started off with the intention of just sprucing up the work we did a few weeks ago, in the end it took from 7am till 2pm to get the green corridor back up to standard. Coincidentally today was the day that the County Council and the Borough Council were strimming and clearing the brook and doing a street litter pick. Through working together, we managed to clear the brook, pick the banks and get the area looking great again. In 7 hours I managed to collect a massive 265KG, bringing our total to 350KG up to this point. I had some very much appreciated help from Kam who happened to be walking home from his night-shift, so thanks to him I managed to shift some very heavy and dirty flytipped rubbish. A total of 174 individual items of McDonald's litter was picked up between Lower Street and Dyson Drive.

The same area was cleared of their litter during the first event of the 1 Ton pick, showing just how negative the impact of their new drive-in on Northfield Avenue has been. We are still awaiting Amanda McDade's efforts to get them to sponsor bins near to their store. During the pick, we talked to loads of different local people, who expressed support when they were told that we didn't work for the council and that the event was also raising money for Children In Need. Residents were keen to mention that the McDonald's had caused negative effects throughout the Northfield/StAndrew's ward, with litter being a regular site on our streets and in our green spaces. Our next pick, scheduled for the 24TH October, will target the woods behind Asda and the link road between the A6003 and the A43. During my next 8 days off, I'm hoping to get out every day, hopefully pushing us on to achieving the 1 Ton target before I go back to work. A really successful day today, resulting in a massive 265KG litter and fly tippage haul. In conjunction with the County and Borough Council staff, we made a really significant difference to the green corridor which adjoins the Slade Brook, a tributary of the River Ise and then the River Nene. A large amount of toxic chemical leaching electrical waste was taken away to be processed and huge amounts of plastics which leach endocrine disrupting hormones in to the local environment and the animal which depend on it. This pick really made a difference to our community, so definitely worthwhile. Our total is now 350KG and £365 in sponsorship for the BBC Children In Need 2014 campaign..

Clean Up Devizes Squad
CUDS was formed primarily to litter pick around our town and its environs. We do so about 4 times a month for 2 hours each time and then have a cup of tea and the all-important biscuits. We also strip useless bits of turf off areas, dig over, plant bulbs and sow wildflower seeds which we maintain on 2 roundabouts and various other places. At present we have about 28 members. We are not a charity - we are funded by grants for which I apply and have back-up from Dervizes Town Council's Park and Open Spaces team when we can't shift all the stuff we have collected ourselves. When we started over 3 years ago, we were viewed with some suspicion - as in 'Are you all doing Community Payback?' and so forth - interesting to think that a great group of oldies would be doing that! Now, in our bright blue hivis vests emblazed with CUDS on the back, nearly everybody knows who we are - and if they don't, they must have been asleep. We work with local groups - Beavers, the Canoe Club, The Lions at their Fair and recently with The Fulltone Orchestra at their free event in the Market Place. We are also planning our reward - apart from cake, which we have before our summer and Christmas breaks. This time we are going on a day out to visit various gardens in Somerset - it's great to be sociable and many have made firm friends within our group.
