Minstead Area Litter Pick

Unit One, The Swan Centre,Eastleigh,SO50 5SG

13 Jan 2016

00:00

We will be meeting at the Andrew Mare car park at 10am on 13th January 2016. We will be picking up rubbish from the car park and up & around the lake and then follow the fence by the A31(forest side) towards Picket Post picking up any rubbish that has blown over from the A31, Directions: Follow the M27 up from Cadnam and onto the A31. After passing the Travelodge on the left, take the next exit(signposted Emery Down). Then take the first exit on the right which is the entrance to the car park. Contact me for more details. I was SO pleased when I opened my eyes this morning & the sun was shining through my bedroom window! Considering the rain we have had in the last couple of months, sun was great even if it was cold, and it was literally freezing. At around 10am we met up in the Andrew Mare car park, all ready for a couple of hours litter picking. We had been alerted to a litter problem in this area when a member of the public, Tessa Keeley, who lives close to the spot contacted us.

So we met up with Tessa, who joined us for the pick to show us exactly where there was a problem. In our team there was me(Sarah-Environment Manager), Tony(The Franchisee), Wez(The Operations Manager), Sharon(Assistant Manager from Picket Post), Kayleigh(Planet Champion from Bournemouth), Sam(Planet Champion from Eastleigh), Marie(Planet Champion from Swaythling) & DJ(Planet Champion from Christchurch). After a quick discussion, we came out of the car park and Team One headed up towards the A31 and the other team(Two) headed down towards Emery Down. Team One walked along the road looking out for items in bushes as well as in the ditch beside the road. We found here a suitcase, a light from roadworks, a hub cap as well as lots of glass & plastic bottles and lots of rubbish. Baby wipes were also a very common find. We crossed the road when we reached the A31 and were me with a huge patch of rubbish strewn across quite a large area and all by the fence that stops the ponies wandering onto the A31. As well as the wrappers, cups & bottles we found two buckets full of bricks and rubble. Even worse were the three bags full of old insulation and broken metal that we found dumped in a puddle. This could have badly injured any of the many New Forest Ponies and donkey's that we saw on our pick. We then zig-zagged down the other side of the road picking in bushes and ditches. Team Two walked down the sides of the road, again zig-zagging in & out of the bushes and they found a couple of huge patches of rubbish which looked like someone had emptied their bin's there. After a couple of hours we met back up at the car park. Our haul for the day was: 6 bin bags jam packed FULL of rubbish, 3 bags of builders rubbish, 2 buckets of rubble, a suitcase, 3 hub caps, a bumper from a car, a light from roadworks and a very large empty cement bag! I have to say that I was really shocked, as was Tessa, at the large amount of rubbish we found in a relatively small area of the New Forest National Park..

Huntsham
Huntsham is a tiny village in mid Devon. For the last four years, Huntsham Society members and our local community (farmers and all) have joined forces twice a year to clean up all the many the lanes for a distance of 2-3 miles from the village; once in April before the verges are hidden in new growth, and once in October when the vegetation has died down and the litter can be seen. This April we had a turnout of over 100 helpers, including many children. We have recently combined our efforts with Mid Devon County Councils campaign to help keep Devon clean and green, also twice a year. It would be fantastic if neighbouring parishes could take up the challenge of keeping the lanes clear of litter.

Hathershaw Litter Busters
We are a group of residents in Hathershaw Oldham Lancashire and are passionate and dedicated to keeping our area and community clean and tidy with help from local authorities. I hope other communities will pluck up the courage and get out there to help your local area and community. We aim to organize new events and litter picks in the future. We try and strive to make a more pleasant area to live in and for visitors of the community to say "wow!" A resident clean up session will be on Sunday 30th June around the Hathershaw area. If you would like more information then please contact me or just come along and get your hands dirty. Our aim and promise is to free up the streets, alleyways and grass and park area's so people can have pride in their community and also respect what other people do for the borough. Website and blog coming soon. If you have any questions or want to join us please E-mail me. Thanks We are buying some new green litter carts as seen in our group photo's they look the business and will help us clean up easily. We will be having another community clean up this month so all volunteers get ready. Quote: Someone asked me the other day and said your mad for picking up litter week in week out, so I said I ain't mad I'm happy to pick other people's mess it's a challenge for me, I get annoyed because people and kid's need educating but it's the attitudes I hate, well I cant be bothered and there's not enough bins ....so do something about it and buy some bins or ask your local council, truth is you could have ten litter bins in a line on a road but someone will drop it on the floor...ah well, me I will carry on regard less with my group until other people realise that we need to keep our streets, alleyways and parks clean...I rest my case your honour. Added a new Hathershaw litter Busters logo in group photos We are cleaning up a alleyway in Hathershaw on Sunday so local residents get your gloves on and muck in for the community. Also before that a community litter pick all equipment supplied by Oldham council, thanks. August 4th so come along ok. #keepOldhamclean @oldham.gov.uk #Letskeepourcommunitybeautiful In our photo gallery I have added a picture of litter bins that I hope we can recycle and reuse for our community to save the authorities time and money. https://mobile.twitter.com/litter_buster

Living near the recreation ground and being a dog walker I usually pick up litter whilst wandering and have taken part in litter clearance events in Chelmsford. My hope is that by setting up this group I can act as a focal point for local residents in helping to maintain the beauty of this town by taking part in occasional "pick-up" events.

This estate clean up was organised by Matt Evans, Housing Officer of the area, and involved staff from the local Office, and contractors. The clean up involved clearing communal areas inside the flats, garages and the outside area. Going forward, it is hoped that a Residents Association will be formed, that will carry out litter picks and maybe start up a weekly gardening club.
