Tidy Tetbury Team Launch

Tetbury,GL8 8AA

17 Aug 2013

23:00

We'll be at The Rec on Sunday 18th August from 11.00 am to 2.00 pm. We're going to do a tidy-up of The Rec along with the volunteers from the Dolphins Trust and there will be a free burger and a drink for all of you who come along and help. Do please join us at any time between 11.00 and 2.00 ! A new campaign to fight litter and tidy up the town had a highly successful launch yesterday, Sunday 18th August, when some 30 volunteers turned up at the Recreation ground to clear the whole area of rubbish. Sparked off by a combination of Dolphins Recreation Centre, Tetbury Town Council, Cotswold District Council and a nationwide volunteer organisation CleanupUK, the volunteers' day attracted helpers from all ages, including Tetbury’s mayor, Liz Farnham, and was supported by Tetbury Rugby Club, who supplied refreshments. Barry Gibbs, Chairman of Dolphins Recreation Centre Trust who manage the recreation ground, was delighted with the turn-out.

“It was really great to see so many young people helping to tackle the litter problem yesterday. We have a beautiful recreation ground here in Tetbury with many facilities, but do have to respect it by everyone keeping it rubbish-free. We filled 15 sacks of the stuff yesterday.” George Monck, Chief Executive of CleanupUK, who lives locally, hopes that this co-operation between the local groups can continue and already other areas in the town have been identified for similar treatment. .

Saltwells Clean & Green
We aim to clean up and maintain an urban nature reserve and ancient woodland right in the heart of a built up industrial area. Saltwells Woods and nature reserve is well used and well loved, and was recently saved from having a housing estate built on it, but sadly also neglected. With a renewed vigour now the woods are saved, we vow to make the area as CLEAN & GREEN as we possibly can.

Winchester Litterpickers
Winchester Litter Pickers were founded in 1995 when three people decided to do more about the litter problem in and around the City. Currently (December 2021) we have over 40 active volunteers and many more supporters. We think it is especially important to give visitors to Winchester a good impression of the City. During the summer months we tidy the Outer Close of the Cathedral daily in the late afternoon and on Monday mornings throughout the year we clear the approaches to the railways station. Twice a month on Wednesday mornings we clear suburban areas in turn, concentrating on the streets and open spaces near the local shops and in particularly bad black spots. We are very much into recycling, recovering the cans, glass and plastic bottles we collect wherever practicable. We are also keen to limit the damaging effects of plastic litter. We are a very sociable group and normally meet up for hot drinks and chats after our litter picks. We also have a very popular annual party. Anyone who would like to join us is invited to call Eddie Woodnutt on 01962 863047 or Jan Wood on 01962 853712 or email us on tidywinchester@gmail.com. You are very welcome to join any of our litter picks as a non-member, but please let us know in advance, so that we can bring along a spare litter grabber if necessary.
