Riverbank Cleanup

Thornbury,BS35 1PW

19 Sep 2008

23:00

We are organising a cleanup of the riverbank from Oldbury Power Station down past the Sailing Club to the village boundary upstream from Whale Wharf on Saturday afternoon 20th September 2008.

We're meeting at the Sailing Club at 2.30pm - the cleanup will probably take 2 hours or so and we'll be having a BBQ afterwards. All necessary equipment will be provided. Please register on this webpage if you are interested in taking part and we'll keep you updated - thanks !

George and Janet

What might you see on a gentle stroll down the riverbank at Oldbury-on-Severn ? Various kinds of bird-life; boats sailing past; walkers enjoying a constitutional along the Severn path ? Of course.

But on Saturday afternoon you would also have seen the villagers of Oldbury, accompanied by staff from Oldbury Power Station and members of Thornbury Sailing Club, down in the long grass and the reeds retrieving months’ worth of rubbish that had found its way there from the river. The Riverbank Cleanup, organised by George Monck and Janet Astle, founders of the newly-formed Oldbury Clean Team group of volunteers, was the first time that these various groups had got together in an effort to remove a whole host of unsightly items from what should be one of the most attractive scenes in South Gloucestershire. George takes up the story : “It was as I was walking down the riverbank earlier this year that I thought – we MUST do something about this. The rubbish that had collected there was simply unbelievable – a deep freeze, various plastic and metal drums, the front end of a canoe, countless pallets. So Janet and I got together and, with the help of the Parish Council and a generous grant from Oldbury Power Station, we have set up Oldbury Clean Team, a group of volunteers who will meet now and then to keep Oldbury tidy.” Janet Astle added : “It was incredible what we achieved on Saturday. 66 people turned up and we collected an amazing 51 sacks of rubbish and piles of larger items such as pallets, car wheels and drums. Who would have thought that so much stuff would have been washed in off the river ? It really was a great effort by the team”. Kathryn James, Environmental Engineer at Oldbury Power Station, commented : "We are delighted to be able to support this event. Our site constantly strives to improve the local environment and this is a good opportunity for staff and the community to work together.".

Keeping Rothwell Clean & Green
Spurred on by the grass verges and parks around our lovely town regularly covered with litter, I decided to do litter picking walks in my free time. I have now formed this group, which is also on Facebook, to encourage others to help. I love where I live and aim to make others proud of their locality, so they think twice before chucking their rubbish. Don’t chuck it, bin it.

We are a small group of Volunteers passionate about keeping our Town and Country clean. We get out and about most days collecting rubbish from our hedgerows, parks and walks. We are happy to work with other local groups and organisations including educational talks and bringing awareness to this problem we have in our Towns and Country. Must of us within the group have mental health problems and or unseen disabilities and discovered walking and hiking helps with our day to day depression and anxiety and by collecting rubbish on our walks also gives us purpose and feelings of achievement. You will find us on Facebook

I am the sole member of this group so far and would like to recruit other like-minded, local litter-killers. I've armed myself with a litter-picker-upper stick, bought online for a tenner, and I use recycled, plastic, supermarket bags for the collections. I walk around my village on litter-spotting missions every now and then with my fiance and our baby daughter. Good exercise and the lanes look much nicer. 'Hotspots' for litter are the bus shelter and the playing fields. Great feeling of satisfaction too. My aim is to keep our beautiful village 100% litter-free.
