January Village Cleanup

Thornbury,BS35 1PW

17 Jan 2009

00:00

Janet and I thought that, once all the excitement of Christmas was over, it would be good for us all to get some fresh air and tidy the village up. Meet at The Pound at 10.30am and we'll spend a maximum of 2 hours going off in little groups to tackle the village's grot spots before meeting up for a BBQ at the end. Please register your details here if you'd like us to keep you up to date - click the button at the top right of this page "Click here to join this group".

Thanks.

George and Janet

We would like to thank all of you who came out for the morning to help us clean up the village on Saturday 17th January. We had a good turnout – 19 people took part in the cleanup and enjoyed the BBQ afterwards. We collected 24 black sacks of rubbish. You might conclude from this that we villagers of Oldbury are an untidy lot.

But Oldbury Clean Team members were surprised to find that, of the 24 sacks worth collected, 15 were recovered not from Oldbury itself but from the approaches to the village. This suggests that people throw litter out of their car windows as they approach Oldbury or as they leave. On the other hand, we collected 5 sacks of litter from the playing fields so we are hoping that we can reduce the amount of rubbish dropped there in the future. Janet Astle, co-founder of Oldbury Clean Team, commented : “The good news is that the village itself isn’t that badly littered. But we now know that it’s the lanes leading into the village that we’ve got to look after and we must try to get the message across to people that it simply isn’t acceptable to throw litter from their cars once they’re away from the village. Picked Moor Lane, which we regard as Oldbury’s gateway, was filthy and Oldbury Clean Team members will now be on the look-out for people throwing litter from their cars outside the village”..

North Lanarkshire Dumpers
I am sick of going into the countryside and finding people have dumped there crap, ie Car Tyres, beds, car seats, cookers, and other crap. I would like to be able to stop this happening but I know that will be hard so I am happy to make it difficult for people.

Forres Community Clean Up
I have set up this group as I have been cleaning the burn near the Mosset Tavern since early 2011. The river fills up with plastic, glass and an assortment of garbage on a regular occasion. I am barely making any in roads into keeping the river clean and so I thought it would be great to have other community member join in to help. Together we can make the river a great place for the enjoyment of the community. In 2016, we merged our group with Forres Community Clean Up, a local group that cleans the streets and public places in Forres. Joe Pirnie is the co-ordinator of this group

Rossall Beach Residents & Community Group
The original Fylde Coast beach care group, we look after the shingle beach between the Five Bar Gate and The Venue at Cleveleys. Our core activities are a four weekly community beach clean and a monthly meeting - and throughout the year we do lots of other things to help to improve this beautiful stretch of coast for the people who use it and the wildlife which lives here. Oh, and we have a lot of fun and make a lot of friends - the community which we create is every bit as important as the litter which we pick up!
