Otterford Parish Litter Pick 8

HEADLINES # 26 Pickers (and 1 Base Team) collected 61 sacks of litter,1 tyre, 2 hubcaps, and miscellaneous items # After sorting, 691 drinks cans, 509 plastic bottles, 142 glass bottles and jars, and assorted metal were recycled A foggy March morning which eventually cleared as we ended the Pick. Twenty six pickers allowed us to clear eight of the nine sub-divisions of the parish – hopefully the remaining one can be picked separately over the next week or so. In two hours we collected 61 sacks of litter, and a range of other things including two hub caps, one tyre, a tractor wheel inner-tube, a wide range of pieces of car bodywork, odds and ends of scrap metal, and miscellaneous other litter.

As ever, a substantial amount of litter came from food wrappings - the largest single amount was again from McDonalds – but we also had wrappers and cups/bottles from Burger King, KFC, Tesco, Sainsburys, Morrisons, Asda, Aldi, Waitrose, Pepsi Cola, Costa Coffee, Greigs, Café Nero, and Marks & Spencer. After sorting as much as possible was recycled. From this Pick we recycled 691 drinks cans, 509 plastic bottles, 142 glass bottles and jars, and assorted metal. .

Mossley Hill
Having written to the council and asked them what they're doing about the litter in the area I thought this looked interesting. Not sure if there are any other people around Mossley Hill who aren't keen on the litter, particularly around Rose Lane but I wondered there might be enough people to do a group litter collection sometime. It's so nice to go out and find the street clean and tidy, it would be great if it happened more often.

Weeley Wombleys
We started as Weeley Wombleys in 2017 as so many residents had expressed their concerns about the amount of litter appearing everywhere, and we are now part of Weeley in Bloom. There are several take-aways in the area, and the detritus was mounting up so much Tendring District Council couldn\'t keep on top of it. We litter pick on the first Monday morning of the month, and there is usually a hard-core of about 15 residents who pick regularly. We also encourage residents to keep their frontages as clear of rubbish as possible and the area has seemed a lot tidier since we started. We have been into the local School wearing our home-made WeeleyWombley costumes, together with McDonalds (our Corporate partner), to encourage the primary school children to litter pick, and to take their litter home with them. McDonalds also very kindly have a member of staff litter picking around the Village practically every day, which is very much appreciated.

Stretford Litter Pickers
We are a volunteer group of local residents tackling litter pollution and fly-tipping in the Stretford, Longford and Gorse Hill ward areas of Trafford through community-led action. Our mission is to make our neighbourhood a safer, cleaner and greener place for wildlife and residents to live and enjoy. We encourage our members to conduct solo litter picks and organise regular community clean-up events for those who want to make Stretford a litter-free zone. We also advocate for local and national initiatives that can help drive long-term environmental behaviour change, while working closely with Trafford Council, schools, local businesses and community groups to target problem areas and raise awareness about the damage caused by litter and fly-tipping.

Sanctuary Shaftesbury Reading
This estate clean up was organised by Matt Evans, Housing Officer of the area, and involved staff from the local Office, and contractors. The clean up involved clearing communal areas inside the flats, garages and the outside area. Going forward, it is hoped that a Residents Association will be formed, that will carry out litter picks and maybe start up a weekly gardening club.
