April Accumulator!

The Thatched Cottage,9 Paul Lane,APPLEBY,DN15 0AR

31 Mar 2012

23:00

No! This isn't an April Fool's joke! We intend keeping on top of the 3 main roads into the village this month. Walk-ups will be scheduled every weekend to cover Risby Road, Ermine Street North as far as the Winterton crossroads and Ermine Street South as far as Dawes Lane. Each weekend a record will be made of the quantity of bags of litter collected - we hope this will go DOWN as the month progresses. Watch this space! If anyone would like to litter-pick get in touch. You are welcome to borrow a pick up stick and hoop, and we can supply The Big Tidy Up bags. If you want to 'give it a go' and decide it isn't for you, not to worry! But if you would like to make a regular contribution you may like to 'adopt' a road. Telephone: 07791 252097 or contact me through the LA website. We started the April event today - the last day of March, with a Risby Road walk-up.

This was more littered than usual, and also a filing cabinet drawer and contents had to be reported to the police as it looked as though it had been stolen then dumped. Someone had also dumped a lot of old wood trellis and assorted clippings from a big conifer and Laurel hedge. And finally on this unpleasant day, we came across a large, dead badger, which for a second I thought was a big brown bear. The good news this week was we have a new volunteer! Thanks, Helen! Bank Holiday Weekend - 26 sacks filled! We covered at least 12 miles of roads this weekend and only went out a couple of hours each day. Risby Road, Ermine Street, Castlethorpe, Leys Lane and North Street in Winterton. All spick and span again! 15 April - More of Brigg Road near Castlethorpe, we soon filled 11 sacks and collected a tyre and wheel. 2 hours of sun, sleet, hail, rain and sun again! 21 April - A very swift walk up of Risby Road, filled 3 sacks plus another 2 on Ermine Street south of the village. We managed an hour and a half and didn't get wet once! May 13 - according to my database calculations we filled our 2000 th sack today when we cleared the recent litter from Risby Road and on Ermine Street around the level crossing to Appleby woods. I have modified the total on LA to correspond. We also collected a pair of tyres and a pair of settee cushions! 23 April - organised collection of a settee, chair and cushions fly-tipped on Risby Road - thanks NLC! 30 April / 6 May - Quick walk ups in between showers, an hour here and there, and the 3 roads into Appleby are virtually litter free! We are positive there isn't as much litter being thrown from car windows on these lanes, although it could be because it has been raining a lot and 'litter bugs' prefer not to open their car window to throw it out! May 20/21 - Ermine Street 1 - Risby Road 3. We are convinced less litter is being dropped in our area compared to one year ago!.

We are a group of residents in Hathershaw Oldham Lancashire and are passionate and dedicated to keeping our area and community clean and tidy with help from local authorities. I hope other communities will pluck up the courage and get out there to help your local area and community. We aim to organize new events and litter picks in the future. We try and strive to make a more pleasant area to live in and for visitors of the community to say "wow!" A resident clean up session will be on Sunday 30th June around the Hathershaw area. If you would like more information then please contact me or just come along and get your hands dirty. Our aim and promise is to free up the streets, alleyways and grass and park area's so people can have pride in their community and also respect what other people do for the borough. Website and blog coming soon. If you have any questions or want to join us please E-mail me. Thanks We are buying some new green litter carts as seen in our group photo's they look the business and will help us clean up easily. We will be having another community clean up this month so all volunteers get ready. Quote: Someone asked me the other day and said your mad for picking up litter week in week out, so I said I ain't mad I'm happy to pick other people's mess it's a challenge for me, I get annoyed because people and kid's need educating but it's the attitudes I hate, well I cant be bothered and there's not enough bins ....so do something about it and buy some bins or ask your local council, truth is you could have ten litter bins in a line on a road but someone will drop it on the floor...ah well, me I will carry on regard less with my group until other people realise that we need to keep our streets, alleyways and parks clean...I rest my case your honour. Added a new Hathershaw litter Busters logo in group photos We are cleaning up a alleyway in Hathershaw on Sunday so local residents get your gloves on and muck in for the community. Also before that a community litter pick all equipment supplied by Oldham council, thanks. August 4th so come along ok. #keepOldhamclean @oldham.gov.uk #Letskeepourcommunitybeautiful In our photo gallery I have added a picture of litter bins that I hope we can recycle and reuse for our community to save the authorities time and money. https://mobile.twitter.com/litter_buster

Forres Community Clean Up
I have set up this group as I have been cleaning the burn near the Mosset Tavern since early 2011. The river fills up with plastic, glass and an assortment of garbage on a regular occasion. I am barely making any in roads into keeping the river clean and so I thought it would be great to have other community member join in to help. Together we can make the river a great place for the enjoyment of the community. In 2016, we merged our group with Forres Community Clean Up, a local group that cleans the streets and public places in Forres. Joe Pirnie is the co-ordinator of this group
