Big Brigg Bag-Up - 2012!

The Thatched Cottage,9 Paul Lane,APPLEBY,DN15 0AR

01 Jan 2012

00:00

We hope to clear the road all the way to Brigg this month. If anyone feels like joining us please give me a call, 735439. We tackled a section alongside Appleby Woods today, January 1st, filling 20 sacks plus we found drums, wheel trims etc. January 2nd - we completed the section alongside the woods! 1.9 miles of very badly littered verge (0.8 miles each side). I am so pleased! We filled another 36 sacks plus we stacked 11 tyres and 2 x 5 gallon drums of thinners on the verge for NLC to collect. We came across 3 dead dear - they looked to have been hit by cars quite recently. We could fill another 100 sacks if we were to clear just 1 metre into the edge of the woods on one side only, it really is disgusting. January 5th - I reached Castlethorpe bends today! A short stretch from where we left off last time but another 13 sacks filled! January 7th - onwards from the first Castlethorpe bend as far as the narrow hedged section - another 13 sacks, 2 of us , 2 hours.

Brigg isn't far now but we still have the section near Appleby Woods and the new wall to Jerry Greens dog sanctuary. January 8th - In 5 hours we did the B1207 from the junction where it turns off the B1208 to Wressle (well, 300 metres short as it started to rain). We filled 36 sacks plus collected a few larger items - a bit of carpet, a small drum etc. The woods adjoining the verge are very badly littered where it has blown in, I estimate we could have added another 50 bags if we were to venture just a couple of metres in along the same stretch of road. The tally so far this year is 116 - for the route to Brigg it stands at around 140 bags! And Brigg isn't far away! January 9th - we reached Wressle - another 4 sacks filled plus a couple of plant trays and a fridge panel. Not far to go now! January 14th - WE DID IT! Today we tackled the section from Castlethorpe, over the M180, to the A18 and then into Brigg as far as the mini roundabout at 'Scawby Brook'. 35 sacks of litter, a drum, bucket, assorted signs and a supermarket trolley! Considering today's litter-pick covered just a short section of road, the quantity of litter was astonishing! But we did it! It is a 13.3 mile round trip from our house to Brigg. We cover the mile and a half out of Appleby on a regular basis the rest has taken roughly 40 hours over 4 weekends. The 'bag tally' from Appleby to Brigg works out at around 200..

Bloomin' Bentham
A gathering of volunteers who meet in the painted bus shelter in High Bentham at 1pm on 13th of each month. We spend an hour or so litter-picking, weeding, planting or generally clearing up around our market town. We also put pressure on the Town Council or District Council when we come across something that we need to tackle in partnership with a larger, more official body.

Saltwells Clean & Green
We aim to clean up and maintain an urban nature reserve and ancient woodland right in the heart of a built up industrial area. Saltwells Woods and nature reserve is well used and well loved, and was recently saved from having a housing estate built on it, but sadly also neglected. With a renewed vigour now the woods are saved, we vow to make the area as CLEAN & GREEN as we possibly can.

Stretford Litter Pickers
We are a volunteer group of local residents tackling litter pollution and fly-tipping in the Stretford, Longford and Gorse Hill ward areas of Trafford through community-led action. Our mission is to make our neighbourhood a safer, cleaner and greener place for wildlife and residents to live and enjoy. We encourage our members to conduct solo litter picks and organise regular community clean-up events for those who want to make Stretford a litter-free zone. We also advocate for local and national initiatives that can help drive long-term environmental behaviour change, while working closely with Trafford Council, schools, local businesses and community groups to target problem areas and raise awareness about the damage caused by litter and fly-tipping.
