Meeting point to be decided upon - watch this space! Tilly joined us on this wet Saturday. We tackled Ermine Street, starting at Dawes Lane end and getting as far as the entrance in to Appleby Woods. I need to measure it but I estimate about 1 mile. In 3 hours we filled 24 sacks and picked up some large items such as a builder's 5 gallon drum, another drum, boots, large polystyrene packaging items, polythene bags (from horse feed) and car parts. The pick up was fully laden! Thanks Ian and Tilly! So far we have filled 324 sacks, about 4.3 tons, and spent a total of 116 'man hours' cleaning up 8 miles of roads around our village. UPDATE! On Sunday 20th, we filled another 49 sacks! Progressing around Appleby Woods entrance and then the section of Brigg Road near the new wall. 10 man hours in all. Finds included 13 tyres, a monitor, gas cylinder and large drums and car parts. Watch out for next Saturday's details..

Quote: Someone asked me the other day and said your mad for picking up litter week in week out, so I said I ain't mad I'm happy to pick other people's mess it's a challenge for me, I get annoyed because people and kid's need educating but it's the attitudes I hate, well I cant be bothered and there's not enough bins ....so do something about it and buy some bins or ask your local council, truth is you could have ten litter bins in a line on a road but someone will drop it on the floor...ah well, me I will carry on regard less with my group until other people realise that we need to keep our streets, alleyways and parks clean...I rest my case your honour. Handsworth Helping Hands
Handsworth Helping Hands is a voluntary group committed to improving the quality of life in Handsworth, Birmingham. Clean Up Devizes Squad
CUDS was formed primarily to litter pick around our town and its environs. We do so about 4 times a month for 2 hours each time and then have a cup of tea and the all-important biscuits. We also strip useless bits of turf off areas, dig over, plant bulbs and sow wildflower seeds which we maintain on 2 roundabouts and various other places. At present we have about 28 members. We are not a charity - we are funded by grants for which I apply and have back-up from Dervizes Town Council's Park and Open Spaces team when we can't shift all the stuff we have collected ourselves. When we started over 3 years ago, we were viewed with some suspicion - as in 'Are you all doing Community Payback?' and so forth - interesting to think that a great group of oldies would be doing that! Now, in our bright blue hivis vests emblazed with CUDS on the back, nearly everybody knows who we are - and if they don't, they must have been asleep. We work with local groups - Beavers, the Canoe Club, The Lions at their Fair and recently with The Fulltone Orchestra at their free event in the Market Place. We are also planning our reward - apart from cake, which we have before our summer and Christmas breaks. This time we are going on a day out to visit various gardens in Somerset - it's great to be sociable and many have made firm friends within our group.
