Appleby Litter-Pick - Ermine Street North

The Thatched Cottage,9 Paul Lane,APPLEBY,DN15 0AR

12 Feb 2011

00:00

Risby Road - DONE! Ermine Street - almost DONE! Where will we go next? The Litter-Pick on Saturday 12th February will be a bit different. We intend walking the 3 main roads we have cleared to pick up new litter and bits we missed first time. If you want to join us, please ring Anita for start time and roads being checked (735439). Thanks! Risby Road today and although we had already done this route, we managed to fill 32 sacks, unbelievable! Sunday morning saw us finishing the hedged part of Risby Road. Filling 8 sacks and finding treasures - a golf ball! A dog toy! A mini tyre! A dear dear - not so nice. We get so much pleasure when we drive down this lane now it is litter free. We estimate we have removed almost 2 tons of litter from this road alone, a mere 3.4 miles . . .

I wondered why my back was a bit sore!! Just a quick update! I have worked out that over the last 3 weeks we have spent around 90 man hours, filled about 300 big sacks of litter weighing in at almost 4 tons! Well done all of us! I have been out for a couple of hours most afternoons - every little bit helps! In 2 hours I can fill 6 sacks, covering about 120 metres of medium width, heavily littered verge. We are planning a Very Big Tidy Up - SOON! Watch this space!!.

Brighter Uckfield Campaign (BUC Up)
The Group operates under the aegis of the Town Council. Every Sunday morning, at 9.00, a small band of volunteers (open to anyone to attend) meets at the Civic Centre to conduct a 'swift-pick' in the worst-affected areas (finishing at about 11.00). The Campaign has moved onto taking small patches of public land in the town and overseeing planting out and maintenance. The town's annual beautiful gardens competition is organised by the Group. The Group joins the annual clear-up of the River Uck that flows through the town. Weeding pavements and cutting back undergrowth are also tasks that are taken on. Most of this work is concentrated on the town centre, but a network of 'litter pickers' is being gradually established on the estates around the town. Volunteers are provided with a hi-vi vest, a litter picking stick, gloves and refuse sacks - and we even have wheeled trolleys to take round with you to deal with the large amounts of litter on a Sunday morning. The Campaign has its own (Don't be a) "Mucky Duck" logo.

Bradshaw Hall Clean UP Friends
This group intends to make the areas around Bradshaw Hall Primary School an example how our public open space, roads, play grounds etc. should look like in terms of cleanliness. Currently, the area is in a relatively good condition when compared with some other areas across Greater Manchester which have been terribly affected by littering, dog fouling and fly tipping. However, there are still a lot of work to be done and a lot of mind-sets to change that it's each individual's responsibility to clean up their own mess.

Appleby Litter Pickers!
We are a small group of volunteers who go out and about armed with litter picking sticks, hoops and bags collecting discarded litter from the paths and verges around our beautiful village and surrounding area. We are proud of where we live and by keeping the lanes and village litter free it shows we care about our community. We meet on a regular basis, usually at the weekend, tackling the area road by road. We try and keep Risby Road, Ermine Street north and south of the village for a couple of miles in each direction as well as within the village itself clear of litter. Sometimes we go further afield if the urge takes us! We welcome your support. Details of the forthcoming Litter-Pick dates may be found here on the Litter action website, on the village website (www.appley-lincs.co.uk) on the village notice board and on the village FaceBook Group (residents will need to join to see the information). We are supported by North Lincolnshire Council who collect the sacks of litter from our home for which we are very grateful. While we are always pleased to welcome new helpers to our small group of volunteers, if you can't help but wish to show your support please give us a toot on your horn and a cheery wave (and a wide berth) when you see us - a spot of encouragement goes a long way! Little could be said to beat the sense of achievement when you have litter picked the beautiful lanes surrounding our village. The countryside is transformed! Getting rid of litter really DOES make a difference!
