A rather miserable, murky November morning - at 7.00 visibility was about two yards. By 9.00 it had largely cleared except for the highest roads. We asked everyone to assess the position when they arrived at their start point just after 9.30 and, if concerned it was still too foggy, not to pick. Luckily the fog had almost lifted, visibility was generally good - and everyone picked. In terms of litter a very patchy day - some teams reported picking small amounts, others said they picked as much as they ever had. We picked a total of 39 sacks, plus some wheels, 4 Hub caps (!), road signs and miscellaneous pieces of plastic and hosepipe. Sadly, after much improvement at the last Pick, there were 54 plastic milk cartons again (without doubt falling off recyclers lories) - another letter to Somerset Waste Partnership is called for.
And lots of pieces of car plastic around the crossroads at the top of Corfe Hill - a problem (vehicles not stopping, and hitting each other or the verge) Somerset County Council seem unwilling to take seriously or do anything about despite the Parish Council's regular requests. And then back to the hall for the traditional bacon/veggie butty and hot drink. And to award two more Blue Hub Caps (and chocolates) to those completing ten Picks. Once everything was sorted McDonalds (as ever) headed the food wrappings ‘pile’, and the Coca Cola Group yet again headed the drinks cans, but were beaten in the plastic bottles total by milk cartons. . After sorting, we recycled 503 drinks cans (total 5800 to date), 291 plastic bottles (total 4854 to date), 79 glass bottles/jars (total 955 to date), and assorted metal .
