BIG SPRING CLEAN 2013

Ravensford Farm,Hamsterley,Durham,DL13 3NH

11 May 2013

23:00

Residents urged to join the Big Spring Clean Published March 08, 2013 Residents, community groups and schools are being urged to sign up for this year’s Big Spring Clean campaign (18 March to 12 May). It is hoped the campaign will see hundreds of volunteers in County Durham and Darlington stepping forward to tidy up their local areas. The campaign is being organised by LitterFree Durham and backed by both Durham County Council and Darlington Borough Council. This is the third year the campaign has been run. Last year’s campaign attracted 1625 people who took part in over 70 litter picks with 1124 bags of litter collected. Now LitterFree Durham is urging people to sign up for this year’s campaign, which will take place between Monday 18 March and 12 May. Gerald Lee, chair of LitterFree Durham, said: “Help us to help you make a difference to your community by joining us on our Big Spring Clean this year.

” Staff and pupils from Gainford Primary school helped to launch the campaign on 6 March and residents, community groups and schools can now sign up to get involved. Cllr Brian Stephens, Cabinet member for neighbourhoods and local partnerships at Durham County Council, said: “The Big Spring Clean has been a great success in recent years, with local people and groups from all over the county giving a helping hand to tidy up their local area. We hope this year’s campaign will be bigger and better.” Cllr Nick Wallis, cabinet member for leisure and local environment at Darlington Borough Council, added: “The majority of us take great pride in our area and don’t drop litter. The Big Spring Clean is a great way for local people to come together and help clean up after the minority who feel it is OK to drop litter in our town.” For further information people can visit www.litterfreedurham.org Residents in County Durham can also email litterfreedurham@durham.gov.uk or call 03000 266 083. This estate clean up was organised by Matt Evans, Housing Officer of the area, and involved staff from the local Office, and contractors. The clean up involved clearing communal areas inside the flats, garages and the outside area. Going forward, it is hoped that a Residents Association will be formed, that will carry out litter picks and maybe start up a weekly gardening club.

West Rainton Clean-up Team
The Clean-up Team is part of West Rainton Green Group, which was formed in April 2003. We aim to remove litter from paths, bridleways, road verges and other open space in the vicinity of West Rainton, thereby improving the attractiveness of the local area. The work is undertaken by members of the Green Group in their spare time. We organise about five or six events each year, and members of our team also collect litter on an individual basis from time to time when the need arises. Since the start of the project we have collected 100 - 150 bags a year, and attempt to recycle as much as possible, particularly cans and bottles. Prior to each event contact is made with Durham County Council, who provide a truck to remove all the bags that are collected. We have contributed to national and regional environmental programmes such as Community Service Volunteers 'Action Earth' campaign, City of Sunderland's 'Just Bin It' campaign, Litterfree Durham's 'Big Spring Clean' and the ENCAMS 'Big Tidy Up'. Since 2009 we have worked in partnership with Network Rail to clean up a nearby length of disused railway. As well as litter-picking we also alert Durham County Council and City of Sunderland Council to fly-tipping in the vicinity of the village as soon as it happens. Prompt removal has significantly improved the visual appeal of local lanes and paths. About 300 incidents have been reported since 2003.

Erdington Litter Busters
Erdington Litter Busters was founded in June 2018 by Rob Gunnell. The idea was to start cleaning up Erdington bit by bit, then grow into a community of volunteers who could keep the area clean. Now we have some support, and a growing group of us meet up twice a month on Saturday mornings near Six Ways island, clear different areas, and have a friendly coffee afterwards. The more people that help us, the greater the difference we can make - and people are already seeing the area improving.
