Sopwell Litter Pickers does The Great British Spring Clean!

St. Albans,AL1 2PB

25 Mar 2018

00:00

UPDATE: Clearly the weather is not on our side this month. After discussing this with a few different members, we have decided to rearrange for next Sunday the 25th March, same time, same place. Third times a charm and hopefully we won't be mucked around by the weather any longer this month! While it's pretty, it's a massive inconvenience. Thanks everyone for keeping up to date with our efforts and sticking by us for our picks, we will do our Great British Spring Clean! Have a nice Sunday in the snow and stay warm and safe. Come and help your local litter picking group at the beginning of March as we give our area a spring clean. We want to beat our previous records of litter picking, all for the Great British Clean Up! Start time is 14:00 until 16:00 on the 18th of March We will be meeting at Vesta Avenue shops and making our way down towards the retail park where the litter tends to build up, lets see if we can beat previous records by getting as many bags as possible.

We have all equipment needed to litter pick but you are very welcome to bring your own if you wish. Additionally you may like to bring the following: - Any first aid supplies you may need while out - A drink to keep hydrated - Anything else you see fit for litter picking Comfy shoes and clothing is highly recommended, please dress for the weather. Please ensure your own safety and others while we are out, if you require insurance, please arrange this yourself but the rules of common sense and being safe apply; don't pick up anything suspicious, sharp, dangerous or heavy and report anything suspicious to local authorities. Please let the event co-coordinator know during or at the end of the event if you have found anything that will need reporting. A hand out will also be given with details on what and who to report waste to. Hope to see you there! If you have any questions, please email cleanupsopwell@outlook.com We did amazingly well with 12 volunteers and definitely beat previous records. We collected 24 bags of rubbish, an old tire, fire extinguisher, a cash box (nothing inside) and wood beams. Great work in the Great British Spring clean Spirit! .

Keep Forebridge Tidy
Keep Forebridge Tidy is a group made up of likeminded individuals within the Forebridge Ward of Stafford who want to keep the area tidy. The scheme works by each volunteer taking ownership of their street, selection of streets or part of their street and keeping it free from litter by conducting regular litter picks. No formal litter picks are arranged allowing volunteers to litter pick as and when they can.

Appleby Litter Pickers!
We are a small group of volunteers who go out and about armed with litter picking sticks, hoops and bags collecting discarded litter from the paths and verges around our beautiful village and surrounding area. We are proud of where we live and by keeping the lanes and village litter free it shows we care about our community. We meet on a regular basis, usually at the weekend, tackling the area road by road. We try and keep Risby Road, Ermine Street north and south of the village for a couple of miles in each direction as well as within the village itself clear of litter. Sometimes we go further afield if the urge takes us! We welcome your support. Details of the forthcoming Litter-Pick dates may be found here on the Litter action website, on the village website (www.appley-lincs.co.uk) on the village notice board and on the village FaceBook Group (residents will need to join to see the information). We are supported by North Lincolnshire Council who collect the sacks of litter from our home for which we are very grateful. While we are always pleased to welcome new helpers to our small group of volunteers, if you can't help but wish to show your support please give us a toot on your horn and a cheery wave (and a wide berth) when you see us - a spot of encouragement goes a long way! Little could be said to beat the sense of achievement when you have litter picked the beautiful lanes surrounding our village. The countryside is transformed! Getting rid of litter really DOES make a difference!

Shotley Bridge Village Trust
The Trust has been in existence for over 20 years but only started its annual spring litter pick in 2007. Normally between 10 and 20 people turn out to help. We also have individual members that keep their local area free of litter. We are a registered charity, which aims to improve the environment in the village and promote a high standard of development, whether it be in new buildings or the renovation and alteration of existing property. We aim to secure the protection and improvement of features of public and historic interest and encourage an interest in the history of the area. Issues that we have addressed over recent years include the desirability and standard of new development proposals and changes to the use and appearance of existing buildings, a wide variety of traffic and highway issues, litter and dog fouling. We have arranged for the erection of plaques to provide information about people and buildings of historic interest, organised village litter pick days and had a variety of speakers at our open meetings. We have presented Design Awards for the best new development, following a poll of members. In the past we have published booklets of items about the history and development of the village and produced a leaflet of heritage trails in the village. More recently we have produced a local directory and been assisting the local businesses and community groups in organising the Shotley Bridge Victorian Christmas Weekend, including litter picks to keep the village looking attractive during the event. In 2011 we were awarded 'outstanding' in the RHS 'It's Your Neighbourhood" award scheme for Britain in Bloom. We have purchased 50 flower tubs, 8 barrier baskets and a trough for the conservation area and our volunteers plant and maintain summer & winter bedding. in 2012 we entered Northumbria in Bloom and were awarded Silver. We gained a Silver Gilt in 2013 and again in 2014. We are aiming for Gold in 2015. Each year we give awards for the best business & residential floral displays. Open meetings are held 3 times a year in the Catholic Church Hall for members and guests to raise and discuss issues arising in the village. Please visit our website for further information.
