Otterford Parish Litter Pick 12

Green Pastures,Bishopswood,nr Chard,TA20 3RS

13 Jul 2018

23:00

.. Our smaller Summer Litter Pick: but – given the amount collected - hopefully all of our 27 pickers (and 2 base team) thought it worthwhile. No snow or bitingly cold wind this time but, rather, a warm sunny day. Yet again we picked in eight of the nine areas of the parish – not picking in the quiet area we reserve for any children joining us. In total we collected 35 sacks; a range of miscellaneous car parts, some wood, and (incredibly usefully) three hubcaps. We also picked up one of our own scoops which we place in the salt bins around the parish – obviously after salting the road in March it was just too much effort for someone to place it back in the bin. After reporting the 61 plastic milk cartons we collected last time to Somerset Waste Partnership we were delighted to see the number come down to 7 this time, with many more obviously now remaining on the recycling lorry. After two hours back to the hall for our usual bacon/veggie rolls and a drink.

And, five more Blue Hub Cap (and chocolates) Awards to those completing ten picks. After sorting we recycled 317 drinks cans, 221 plastic bottles, 37 glass bottles/jars, and assorted metal. In just 12 Picks we have now collected (and recycled) over 5,000 drinks cans. McDonalds (as ever) headed the food wrappings ‘pile’, and the Coca Cola Group yet again headed the drinks cans (now over 1000 Coca Cola Group drinks cans collected and recycled in total) and plastic bottles. We are grateful to idVerde (Taunton Deane Borough Council contractor) for arranging a visit by the large road sweeper to sweep roads in the village and around the parish. .

Coventry Canal
I am an individual who walks part of the Coventry canal to and from work everyday. I have only been walking along the canal since October 2017 despite being a Coventrian my entire life! It is the city's best kept secret and so peaceful and calm away from crowds and cars. But it makes me angry and sad to see such a beautiful habitat ruined with litter so I started picking litter! I usually pick on my way to/from work in the week but I plan to do more at the weekends and travel further to notoriously messy parts of the canal. If anyone would care to join me to make a difference and tidy up for the animals and all of us to enjoy, please get in touch :) Thank you, Jennysha P.S. There is now a new Canal & River Trust Towpath Taskforce which runs on Thursday mornings - please see CRT website for more info. Give as much or as little time as you can :) Please report any flytipping via: 1) website: fixmystreet.com 2) email: enquiries.westmidlands@canalrivertrust.org.uk

CLEAR Buckhaven
Community-led Environmental Action for Regeneration is a voluntary group established in 2007. As residents of a neglected urban regeneration area, we aim to improve the local environment and to help build pride in our local community. CLEAR works to improve the appearance and character of the Buckhaven & Denbeath area through a range of actions which include: • Litter clearing + recycling: improving greenspaces around town, organising both special and ongoing cleanups + recycling collected waste. • Planting: making public open space more attractive by planting flower bulbs, shrubs and trees in parks, shoreline, roadside verges, coastal path and other locations. Smallscale landscaping - installing railings, painting, wall murals, and similar especially focused on neglected or rundown spots • Advocacy, lobbying: Influence policies and practices of key actors such as political representatives, Fife Council, other agencies to combat misuse of public space, encourage investment and improvements in services, tackling eyesores. • Others: CLEAR works with others especially Kinetic/YMCA youth project, Community Wardens, other Fife Council departments. We also started some local public talks to help build community awareness

Friends of Charlton Brook
FRIENDS OF CHARLTON BROOK are an environmental group consisting of local people who aim to restore Charlton Brook and the dam to it's former glory. New members are always welcome and encouraged to take part in litter picks and fund raising events. Local folk will know the area very well as a pleasant walk between the Barrel Inn and the Bridge Inn. FOCB are currently working with Sheffield City Council Parks and Countryside and Environmental Planning, Wildlife trust and other local groups. Public green spaces improve the look of an area for everybody, they increase bio-diversity and counteract the effects of global warming. Sadly Charlton Brook needs care and attention, which has been lacking for many years. Our Aims De-Silting of the dam and stream. Improved Fishing Facilities. Better footpaths and lighting and to include disabled access. New seating, litter and dog bins. Regular refuse clearance. Improvement of BMX track and installation of robust playground. Woodland management to increase diversity of the wildlife habitat.

Clean Up Devizes Squad
CUDS was formed primarily to litter pick around our town and its environs. We do so about 4 times a month for 2 hours each time and then have a cup of tea and the all-important biscuits. We also strip useless bits of turf off areas, dig over, plant bulbs and sow wildflower seeds which we maintain on 2 roundabouts and various other places. At present we have about 28 members. We are not a charity - we are funded by grants for which I apply and have back-up from Dervizes Town Council's Park and Open Spaces team when we can't shift all the stuff we have collected ourselves. When we started over 3 years ago, we were viewed with some suspicion - as in 'Are you all doing Community Payback?' and so forth - interesting to think that a great group of oldies would be doing that! Now, in our bright blue hivis vests emblazed with CUDS on the back, nearly everybody knows who we are - and if they don't, they must have been asleep. We work with local groups - Beavers, the Canoe Club, The Lions at their Fair and recently with The Fulltone Orchestra at their free event in the Market Place. We are also planning our reward - apart from cake, which we have before our summer and Christmas breaks. This time we are going on a day out to visit various gardens in Somerset - it's great to be sociable and many have made firm friends within our group.

I am retired and collect litter as an individual. I started litter picking when I was living in Small Heath and collected more than 1,750 bags over a three year period. I have now moved to Coseley, which is far less blighted by litter, but it is still about. I collect litter two or three times a week around Upper Ettingshall Road, Ivy House Lane, Shaw Road and roads and alleys leading from that area.
