Otterford Parish Litter Pick 9

HEADLINES # More collected than we first thought! # 19 Pickers (and 1 Base Team) collected 33 sacks of litter, 2 hubcaps, and miscellaneous items # After sorting, we recycled 178 drinks cans, 183 plastic bottles, 25 glass bottles/jars, and assorted metal Several of our regular pickers had previously suggested a mid-Summer Pick. Opinions were varied, with some concerned that rampant vegetation would hide a lot of litter. We decided to ‘give it a go’ in early July, and at the end the results proved to be mixed. All areas saw a reduction, some more so than others; and by the end we had collected 33 bags (compared to average of 50+). Nineteen volunteers picked seven of the nine parish sub-divisions. In addition to the sacks we collected a large television screen and other video boxes, a caravan roof light, some tiles, and the ever present hub caps (two this time).

We also fond a handbag containing everything apart from cash – this has been reported to the police. As usual, much of our litter came from food wrappings - the largest single amount by far was again from McDonalds – but we also had wrappers and cups/bottles from Burger King, KFC, Tesco, Sainsburys, Morrisons, Asda, Aldi, Waitrose, Pepsi Cola, Costa Coffee, Greigs, Café Nero, and Marks & Spencer. After sorting as much as possible has been recycled. From this Pick we recycled 178 drinks cans, 183 plastic bottles, 25 glass bottles/jars, and a range of metal. .

Otterford Parish Litter Pick
Otterford Parish Litter Pick aims to remove as much litter (and fly-tipped items) as possible from the roads and lanes in the parish - which is located in the beautiful Blackdown Hills AONB on the Somerset/Devon border. We now hold three Litter Picks annually - in March, July and November. After sorting,as much litter as possible is recycled: to date we have recycled 7,446 drinks cans, 6,041 plastic bottles, 1,216 glass bottles/jars, and lots of miscellaneous metal. Since our 17th Pick in March 2020 we have also been recycling plastic food containers and lids, paper and cardboard, and aluminium foil. We are grateful to Whitbread Plc (from when they owned Costa Coffee) and Litteraction for donating equipment and clothing: to Somerset West & Taunton District Council (and their contractor idVerde) for providing litter sacks for each Pick and now collecting the rubbish afterwards; and to Somerset Waste Partnership for donating vests, gloves and sacks.

St. Briavels Beautifiers
I am the sole member of this group so far and would like to recruit other like-minded, local litter-killers. I've armed myself with a litter-picker-upper stick, bought online for a tenner, and I use recycled, plastic, supermarket bags for the collections. I walk around my village on litter-spotting missions every now and then with my fiance and our baby daughter. Good exercise and the lanes look much nicer. 'Hotspots' for litter are the bus shelter and the playing fields. Great feeling of satisfaction too. My aim is to keep our beautiful village 100% litter-free.

Winchester Litterpickers
Winchester Litter Pickers were founded in 1995 when three people decided to do more about the litter problem in and around the City. Currently (December 2021) we have over 40 active volunteers and many more supporters. We think it is especially important to give visitors to Winchester a good impression of the City. During the summer months we tidy the Outer Close of the Cathedral daily in the late afternoon and on Monday mornings throughout the year we clear the approaches to the railways station. Twice a month on Wednesday mornings we clear suburban areas in turn, concentrating on the streets and open spaces near the local shops and in particularly bad black spots. We are very much into recycling, recovering the cans, glass and plastic bottles we collect wherever practicable. We are also keen to limit the damaging effects of plastic litter. We are a very sociable group and normally meet up for hot drinks and chats after our litter picks. We also have a very popular annual party. Anyone who would like to join us is invited to call Eddie Woodnutt on 01962 863047 or Jan Wood on 01962 853712 or email us on tidywinchester@gmail.com. You are very welcome to join any of our litter picks as a non-member, but please let us know in advance, so that we can bring along a spare litter grabber if necessary.

Collie Collections
Currently most of the work is done by my Border Collie who collects crisp and other wrappers and plastic bottles. She then finds the nearest waste bin and puts the litter in it. She has been doing this for the past 5 years.

Middlewich Clean Team
The Middlewich Clean Team was set up with the basic intention of keeping our town litter free. However we now do much more as we have an education programme working in all of our schools and pre-school groups and have carried out a number of environmental projects. We have a small committee and well over 100 members. Litter picking is undertaken by all members, either by joining a group litter pick or simply by keeping an area litter free. We have also worked with Government Departments on controlling ant-social behaviour and very recently, several of our members qualified as Community Crime Fighters and have been involved in the restorative justice system. We help set up other Clean Teams nationally and are the Mother Clean Team to some of the other organisations included on this site.
