Hot Weather

After a hot weekend you'd expect there to be a lot of litter about. Our team went out on Monday evening and we were hard pressed to fill two bags with litter. Covering our usual area of the Sheerwater Recreation Ground and about 1km of the Basingstoke canal we found very little. A virtuous circle may be developing. Less visible litter means that people are less inclined to drop fresh litter. Less litter to pick up means that the council has time to be more thorough and rigorous. Less litter for us to pick up means that we can pay attention to the detail and extend our areas. Star find last night was two unopened cans of Polish lager stashed behind a tree along the canal. I left them outside the door of a deserving neighbour (who happens to be Polish). .

Otterford Parish Litter Pick
Otterford Parish Litter Pick aims to remove as much litter (and fly-tipped items) as possible from the roads and lanes in the parish - which is located in the beautiful Blackdown Hills AONB on the Somerset/Devon border. We now hold three Litter Picks annually - in March, July and November. After sorting,as much litter as possible is recycled: to date we have recycled 7,446 drinks cans, 6,041 plastic bottles, 1,216 glass bottles/jars, and lots of miscellaneous metal. Since our 17th Pick in March 2020 we have also been recycling plastic food containers and lids, paper and cardboard, and aluminium foil. We are grateful to Whitbread Plc (from when they owned Costa Coffee) and Litteraction for donating equipment and clothing: to Somerset West & Taunton District Council (and their contractor idVerde) for providing litter sacks for each Pick and now collecting the rubbish afterwards; and to Somerset Waste Partnership for donating vests, gloves and sacks.

Ravenfield Rubbish Rascals
We have 26 active litter pickers each one of whom takes responsibility for a stretch of road or an area of green space. We meet occasionally to review tactics and to swop ideas. We have a massive litter pick once a year to shift an area of accumulated rubbish. We have good relations with the Parish Council and the local authority who are great at clearing flytipping when we inform them.
