THE BIG SPRING CLEAN

Ravensford Farm,Hamsterley,Durham,DL13 3NH

19 Mar 2011

00:00

LitterFree Durham CPRE Big Spring Clean 19 March to 16 April 2011 LitterFree Durham is a voluntary group within the County Durham Branch of CPRE (Campaign to Protect Rural England). With the support of Durham County Council and Darlington Borough Council we are organising a Big Spring Clean across both county and borough. It will run from 19 March to 16 April 2011, which are the last four weeks before the start of the school Easter holidays. This message is to request your help. Please join in our Big Spring Clean. Littered places look unattractive and on occasion both unpleasant and threatening. Everyone would prefer that the litter was not there - it reduces the quality of life for all who have to live, work or travel amongst it. The collection of litter is legally the responsibility of the two Councils and we think both do a good job.

But so much litter is now dropped that we believe it is just not possible for them to keep all the streets, roads and public spaces litter free. Since the 1960s the amount of litter dropped each year in the UK has risen by 500%. The spending by local authorities on picking up litter has also risen dramatically. Over the four year period ending March 2009 local authorities in England increased their spending on cleaning roads and streets by 49%. Yet we still see too much litter about. Council expenditure on litter cannot go on rising at this rate so, until people stop dropping it, the only way we shall have less litter lying about is if we all pick some of it up. Please help us by organising a Litter Pick in your locality - we shall be very happy to give advice and help. Please let us know the date, time and location of any Pick so that we can help with publicity. Alternatively, ask your members to join another Pick being organised in your area. To contact us: Email springclean11@litterfreedurham.org.uk Call or text 0757 253 1725 Visit www.litterfreedurham.org.uk Best wishes and we do hope we shall hear from you. Kit Bartram Chairman, LitterFree Durham CPRE .

Friends of Charlton Brook
FRIENDS OF CHARLTON BROOK are an environmental group consisting of local people who aim to restore Charlton Brook and the dam to it's former glory. New members are always welcome and encouraged to take part in litter picks and fund raising events. Local folk will know the area very well as a pleasant walk between the Barrel Inn and the Bridge Inn. FOCB are currently working with Sheffield City Council Parks and Countryside and Environmental Planning, Wildlife trust and other local groups. Public green spaces improve the look of an area for everybody, they increase bio-diversity and counteract the effects of global warming. Sadly Charlton Brook needs care and attention, which has been lacking for many years. Our Aims De-Silting of the dam and stream. Improved Fishing Facilities. Better footpaths and lighting and to include disabled access. New seating, litter and dog bins. Regular refuse clearance. Improvement of BMX track and installation of robust playground. Woodland management to increase diversity of the wildlife habitat.
