Alveston Spring Clean 2010

Alveston,BS35 3JQ

20 Mar 2010

00:00

Yes it's that time of year when we clear up our gardens to make way for the new growth of Spring. The hedgerows are being cut back, but 'Oh Dear' - what a mass of unsightly litter! South Gloucestershire Council are championing a 'Spring Clean' in March and April. Many hands make light work, so please join The Alveston Litter Busters Clear-up. Meet at The Parade at 2pm. Refreshments afterwards when we can discuss how the group is going and share ideas. If you can't make it but have suggestions/areas that need clearing up, please get in touch. alvestonlitterbusters@googlemail.com The fight against litter continued with the Spring Clean around Alveston and Earthcott. It was lovely to see so many Litter Busters which meant that a large proportion of the area was covered. This complimented the excellent job done by the Brownies earlier in the week. The 15 volunteers managed to collect 20 bin bags of litter.

An extra special thank you to everyone for turning up and carrying on despite the soaking drizzle. It was good to hear positive comments and beeping car horns from passers by, demonstrating that people do care about how our village looks and appreciate the work we are doing. Afterwards we could relax at The Alveston House Hotel where we had been invited for complimentary tea and delicious biscuits. Many thanks go out to The Hotel staff and management for making us feel so welcome..

Appleby Litter Pickers!
We are a small group of volunteers who go out and about armed with litter picking sticks, hoops and bags collecting discarded litter from the paths and verges around our beautiful village and surrounding area. We are proud of where we live and by keeping the lanes and village litter free it shows we care about our community. We meet on a regular basis, usually at the weekend, tackling the area road by road. We try and keep Risby Road, Ermine Street north and south of the village for a couple of miles in each direction as well as within the village itself clear of litter. Sometimes we go further afield if the urge takes us! We welcome your support. Details of the forthcoming Litter-Pick dates may be found here on the Litter action website, on the village website (www.appley-lincs.co.uk) on the village notice board and on the village FaceBook Group (residents will need to join to see the information). We are supported by North Lincolnshire Council who collect the sacks of litter from our home for which we are very grateful. While we are always pleased to welcome new helpers to our small group of volunteers, if you can't help but wish to show your support please give us a toot on your horn and a cheery wave (and a wide berth) when you see us - a spot of encouragement goes a long way! Little could be said to beat the sense of achievement when you have litter picked the beautiful lanes surrounding our village. The countryside is transformed! Getting rid of litter really DOES make a difference!

We live here and care about our neighbourhood. It is up to us to look after it and make it a nice place to live. Our ground-zero is Sheerwater Recreation Area. This is a heavily used open space which many of us enjoy using. Because it is so popular it inevitably attracts a lot of rubbish - but this is an easy, and rewarding, problem to deal with. Once we've cleaned up the park on one of our regular n0 $#!+ sessions, then we extend our reach outwards along the canal and neighbouring areas to cover as much as we can.

Winchester Litterpickers
Winchester Litter Pickers were founded in 1995 when three people decided to do more about the litter problem in and around the City. Currently (December 2021) we have over 40 active volunteers and many more supporters. We think it is especially important to give visitors to Winchester a good impression of the City. During the summer months we tidy the Outer Close of the Cathedral daily in the late afternoon and on Monday mornings throughout the year we clear the approaches to the railways station. Twice a month on Wednesday mornings we clear suburban areas in turn, concentrating on the streets and open spaces near the local shops and in particularly bad black spots. We are very much into recycling, recovering the cans, glass and plastic bottles we collect wherever practicable. We are also keen to limit the damaging effects of plastic litter. We are a very sociable group and normally meet up for hot drinks and chats after our litter picks. We also have a very popular annual party. Anyone who would like to join us is invited to call Eddie Woodnutt on 01962 863047 or Jan Wood on 01962 853712 or email us on tidywinchester@gmail.com. You are very welcome to join any of our litter picks as a non-member, but please let us know in advance, so that we can bring along a spare litter grabber if necessary.
